The annual ‘Young Persons’ Lecture Competition’ is hosted by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, Southern Africa (IOM3).

Venue: The PE St George’s Club, Bird Street, Port Elizabeth

Time:    to be confirmed, but we are looking at starting at approximately 10:30 and ending by about 14:30

This prestigious competition is aimed at young scientists and engineers in the disciplines of Materials, Minerals, Mining, Packaging, Clay Technology and Wood Science. Each participant is judged on their presentation skills, which include diction and enthusiasm, visual aids, handling of questions by the judges and technical content.

The first leg of this year’s Young Persons’ Lecture Regional Competition was held in Port Elizabeth at the Nelson Mandela University on Tuesday 8 May 2018. The Centre for rubber science and technology (CRST) produced 3 participants;

  • Victor Agbakoba – Evaluation of male latex condoms reinforced with single-walled carbon nanotubes
  • Cleopatra Dube -  Beneficiation of pyrolysed waste tyre char using biomass for the production of fuel pellets
  • Lefika Mosia – Influence of crumb rubber and wood-flour on the thermal and physical properties of Polypropylene

At the end of the rigorous yet interesting regional competition, Victor Agbakoba made the Top-3 and would be representing the CRST at the SA-Nationals.

The winner of the Southern African region will represent us at the World Competition in October and we are thrilled that it will be hosted by the IOM3 Southern Africa in Port Elizabeth.
